    The narrative explores the history, accidents, and personal experiences of scientists, activists, and policymakers to demonstrate how attitudes toward nuclear power have shifted, particularly among environmentalists and climate scientists who once opposed it. Visscher presents a solid argument that nuclear energy has been misunderstood since its birth, asserting that a fair reassessment of the technology is now overdue given the scale of the climate crisis.

    The Chernobyl disaster serves as one of the major historical focal points. In April 1986, a safety test at the Chernobyl nuclear plant in Soviet Ukraine went wrong, causing reactor four to explode, release radioactive material, and force the evacuation of tens of thousands of residents. The author relies on this event to explain how nuclear power became deeply associated with catastrophe in the public mind. While he does not deny the suffering the accident caused, Visscher argues that the fear it produced was far larger than the actual, measurable harm. The text also analyzes Fukushima and the recent scare around Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia plant during the 2022 war, using both cases to illustrate the same point: nuclear accidents generate far more panic than actual radiation damage.

    To humanize this shift in perspective, the book narrates the personal journey of climate scientist James Hansen, one of the most prominent voices calling for nuclear power to be taken seriously as a climate solution. Hansen, once known mainly as a climate activist arrested at fossil fuel protests, has become an outspoken supporter of nuclear energy, arguing that renewables alone cannot replace fossil fuels fast enough. The author himself underwent a similar transformation; Visscher recalls that in the year 2000, as a young environmental journalist, he wrote that the nuclear industry should be brought down before it could damage the twenty-first century. Years of covering climate change slowly changed his mind. By highlighting these personal transformations, the text demonstrates that opinions on nuclear energy can shift significantly once people engage seriously with the evidence.

    Visscher notes that solar and wind power, while growing quickly, still make up a small share of the global energy mix and cannot yet meet rising global energy demand on their own. Nuclear energy is presented as a crucial technology to close this gap and reduce carbon emissions, despite decades of public resistance.

    A large portion of the work is devoted to newer nuclear technologies, including small modular reactors (SMRs) and thorium-based molten salt reactors. These designs are presented as safer and more efficient than the massive reactors built in the twentieth century. The author explains these complex concepts in simple, accessible language, describing how a molten salt reactor can shut itself down safely through the laws of physics rather than human intervention. This clarity makes the more technical sections easy to follow, even for readers without a science background.

    The volume also addresses the long-standing problem of nuclear waste. Visscher uses Finland’s Onkalo repository—a storage facility built five hundred meters underground in solid granite—as a premier example of how the technical side of the waste problem has largely been solved. He argues that nuclear waste, when properly contained, represents a far smaller and more manageable problem than the pollution and emissions caused by burning fossil fuels.

    Importantly, the text does not hesitate to discuss the dangers of nuclear energy honestly. It examines Chernobyl and Fukushima in detail to walk readers through what can go wrong, yet insists that modern reactor designs, combined with decades of accumulated safety knowledge, have made such accidents far less likely today. The author contends that the benefits of nuclear power, especially in the fight against climate change, clearly outweigh its risks when compared honestly with those of other energy sources.

    The politics surrounding nuclear energy is a recurring theme throughout the book. Visscher explains how governments, regulators, and environmental groups have shaped the fate of nuclear power, often more than the technology itself has. One chapter argues that a regulatory culture built on the idea that even a theoretical accident was unacceptable, rather than any actual disaster, is what made nuclear power so expensive to build. The narrative suggests that political caution and public anxiety, rather than engineering limits, have held nuclear energy back.

    Furthermore, the text touches on the historical link between nuclear energy and nuclear weapons, an association that has fueled public fear since the technology’s earliest days. The author argues that this link is weaker than commonly assumed, and that treating civilian nuclear energy as inherently dangerous because of its connection to weapons has done the technology a great disservice.

    Looking forward, the closing chapter explores how new reactor designs, alongside advances in materials and fuel technology, could make nuclear power safer, more efficient, and more affordable in the coming decades.

    Though Visscher does a commendable job of explaining the technical and historical aspects of nuclear energy, the book could have paid more attention to how the technology is viewed outside Europe and North America. The focus remains heavily on Western case studies, while countries in South Asia, including Pakistan and India, appear only briefly. A closer look at nuclear energy debates in the developing world would have made the book more globally relevant.

    Another area where the argument could have gone further is in its treatment of opposing views. Although the author mentions the concerns of nuclear skeptics, these points are usually presented only to be quickly countered rather than explored in depth. A more balanced engagement with critics of nuclear expansion, particularly on questions of high costs and construction delays, would have strengthened the book’s overall thesis.

    To sum up, The Power of Nuclear makes a solid, well-researched, and engaging case for why nuclear power deserves to be reconsidered as part of the solution to the climate crisis. By successfully challenging the common perception of nuclear energy as inherently dangerous and outdated, Visscher explains the history and science clearly while showing how new technologies can address climate change. It is written in a way that makes complex scientific and political debates accessible to a general audience, offering a useful account of how public opinion has changed and why that shift matters for global energy policy. Ultimately, it is a worthwhile read for anyone interested in energy policy, climate change, or the broader debate over how the world should power itself, leaving readers with a profound sense of urgency to weigh the evidence for themselves.
