The piece by  Saurav AgrawalDirector General of the  Economic Council of India, reframes  ICU “Intensive Care Unit”,  to signify ‘Instability, Conflict, and Unsustainability’ in the contemporary global context, suggesting humanity is in a state of intensive crisis due to conflicting interests, environmental degradation, and social inequalities. 

    The 21st century, characterized  by unprecedented growth and urbanization, is marked by a steep rise in global debt, exacerbating issues like unemployment and political polarization. A mere 12% of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are on track in conflict-sensitive areas and none of the targets for SDG 16 related to peace are close to achievement. 

    Agrawal advocates for a shift towards ‘Regenerative Peace’ and an ‘Alternative and Integrated Development Program’ to foster economic non-violence and sustainability. The call is for a collective responsibility to rebuild trust and equitable resource distribution, addressing deep-rooted global crises through holistic and inclusive efforts.
